Terms of use

By using Tegaki you agree to these terms. They are short.

Last updated 6 October 2026.

Using the app

Tegaki is free to use, for learning to write Japanese. You don’t need an account. Please don’t try to disrupt the site or use it to harm others.

Marks are a teacher’s view

The marks show how a Japanese teacher would mark your writing, at the lenient, standard or strict level you choose. They are not an official standard: Japan’s guidelines for writing characters, and the Kanji Kentei exam, do not count differences in how a stroke ends as mistakes.

The data and the app

The character data Tegaki builds from KanjiVG, KANJIDIC2 and JMdict is published under CC BY-SA 4.0. The fonts and libraries have their own licences, all listed in the credits. The Tegaki application itself belongs to Hosam Alsayyed and is not covered by those licences.

As it is

Tegaki is provided as it is, without warranties. We take care that every stroke order is the one taught in Japanese elementary schools, but mistakes can happen; if you find one, please tell us.

Your progress

Your progress is kept on your device, not by us, so we can’t recover it if it is lost. Save it as a file (in Progress) to keep a copy.
